We have moved from bbPress, which is barebones forum software that is easy to administer to vBulletin which has oodles of features and an old school administrative interface. Please bear with me as I get up to speed on the new software. Content and user accounts from the old forums were not transferred to the new forums because a bbPress to vBulletin converter has not been written. In the fourth excerpt, Smillie discusses Falwell’s commitment to Liberty University’s policy debate program. The Falwells spend $14 million annually on Liberty’s football squad and its 18 NCAA-level sports teams. The debate team — its unofficial, 19th athletic program — costs a mere $500,000 a year. It’s probably the best return on capital Falwell ever invested. 08.13.08There’s A Bad Moon on the Rise
PFDebate Blog (0)A dust-up on the NDT-CEDA listserv started last week after a video was posted on YouTube that showed Fort Hays State University debate coach Bill Shanahan mooning Shanara Reid during the argument that occurred after a quarterfinal match at CEDA Nationals in March between Fort Hays State (KS) and the eventual champions from Towson State (MD). Fort Hays State is investigating the incident which has made the TV news in Kansas and has landed on the front page of CNN’s website. The setup is in the NDT-CEDA listserv archives. The video is on YouTube. Warning, there is objectionable language in the YouTube video.

08.07.08Avoid Mispronunciations
PFDebate Blog (0)Buzzfeed has found a couple of lists of mispronunciations. Mispronunciations may not lose debates, but it diminishes your credibility as a speaker. It’s easy to slip into bad habits, especially during the off-season. Start practicing the words that give you problems. The worst mispronunciation I’ve heard was in the first negative of a novice CX debate. I heard 8 minutes on the virtues of flea bargaining on the prison overcrowding topic. It was just like watching an Emily Litella sketch on Saturday Night Live.

08.05.08Loquitur on Hiatus
PFDebate Blog (0)Mahesha Subbaraman has announced that the Loquitur podcast is going hiatus while he devotes his energy to a new project: The American Debater which has been soft-launched via Facebook. The American Debater (TAD) is described as “…cross between TIME and The Atlantic Monthly for the high school speech/debate community.” It will be interesting to watch this project unfold. They are currently seeking contributors and editors.
